One day, Helena comes home to discover local law enforcement and FBI raiding her house. Upon questioning them, she is informed that her father has escaped from prison and is now a fugitive. It comes as a shock to Stephen as Helena had told him that her parents died when she was young and that she gave herself the tattoos. This increases the tension between them, as they grow further apart.
The police soon find evidence that her father along with a fellow inmate was killed in a car crash during their attempted escape, which is later, confirmed through DNA. Despite this, Helena begins to grow increasingly paranoid as she experiences bizarre occurrences that suggest her father is still alive and possibly stalking her.
Helena sets traps in the forest around her house to catch whoever it might be, but the only thing she finds is a mangled rabbit in a snare trap. Once there, tensions between them grow, as Jacob demands that Helena and Marigold accompany him as they flee to Canada together and live as a family. Helena refuses his request, which prompts Jacob to attack her and claim that he will kill Stephen and forcefully take Marigold alone.
